Academy of Art University's Interior Architecture & Design Students Donate Time and Talent to Fight Hunger in COPIA's Canstruction Compe
San Francisco, CA (PRWeb) December 5, 2006 -- Congratulations to Erin N. Sudderth, Jenny Fan, Chris Lee, Archana Meyer, Alissa Nuttall and Danielle Velasco whose exhibit "California Rolls Away Hunger" is helping to raise awareness for the fight against hunger. These six Interior Design School students donated their time and talents to COPIA's 2nd Annual Canstruction Event created by the Society of Design Administration to help end world hunger. The exhibits are currently on display through January 1, 2007 at COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts, a top wine country destination, located just one hour north of San Francisco in Napa.
The students' "California Rolls Away Hunger" exhibit is one of two Honorable Mentions submitted to the National Canstruction Competition for Spring 2007. Constructed out of 3,707 donated canned goods, the exhibit portrays a Japanese meal of California rolls, wasabi, ginger, a cup and a bottle of sake. The Academy's team chose the sushi concept because "sushi is an art-form unto itself", said team leader, Erin Sudderth. " We wanted to play up the fact that San Francisco is a such a great city to live in, filled with diverse cultures. The combination of the sushi and California just provided the perfect opportunity to bring a little light-heartedness to a very serious issue."
Although the project was challenging and time consuming "it was a great cause to get involved with the Napa Valley Food Bank and COPIA", said Jenny Fan, "getting to do something creative and show the architecture firms that interior design students can come up with something as good as professionals was great."
CANSTRUCTION: We CAN Build a Solution to Hunger, combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help end hunger. Competing teams, lead by architects, engineers and student designers showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely of canned food goods. At the close of the competition all canned goods will be donated to local food banks, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
