Retired Cornell University Frat House Cook Turns 90--Sigma Pi Brothers and Friends to Pay Homage to Their Beloved “Dolly”
ITHACA, NY (PRWEB) September 8, 2005 - Aldolphus Cunningham Hailstork II, who for 32 years served Cornell University Sigma Pi fraternity brothers dishes of mystery meat seasoned with wit, humor and friendship, is celebrating his 90th birthday on Saturday, September 9th. Mr. Hailstork, lovingly referred to as Dolly by members of the Mu Chapter of Sigma Pi fraternity, will be honored at a birthday party organized by alumni on Sept. 10.
Dolly has always been the foundation of the house, said Mark Wood, class of 88, the partys organizer. Hes a big part of why we all came together as brothers, why we stayed connected as friends and why we keep coming back to visit.
Dolly is known more for being the soul of the Sigma Pi fraternity than for his soul food. From 1960 to 1992 he mentored 17- and 18-year old freshman pledges and remembered their names, hometowns and ex-girlfriends years after they graduated. The Ivy League students vied to go bowling on Sunday nights with the former boxer and Negro League baseball star.
I loved working at the house, said Dolly. Being involved in the students lives, talking to them until all hours of the night, arguing, joking, and watching out for them. Somebody had to keep them in line once they left home.
People who met Dolly never forgot him. Fraternity brothers from classes spanning 50 years recently contributed to a retirement fund for him, including some who had graduated a decade before he arrived at Sigma Pi Mu. When alumni returned for visits, they headed straight to the kitchen to greet him, where theyd find him holding court with five or six other brothers. Women who once dated Sigma Pi men stayed in touch with Dolly even after they graduated; years later they invited him to their weddings.
An Honorary Brother, a Great Friend
Dolly was born on Sept. 9, 1915 near Ithaca, and currently lives there. More than 100 alumni from all around the United States plan to attend his birthday party to toast the employee who became their friend.
Dolly was always a trooper, said Nick Long, class of 68. Give him a good budget and wonders such as the world's finest banana cream pie would appear. Give him a weak budget, which happened all too often and so-called veal parmigiana, would land on the table. Of course, everything was seasoned with Dolly's Dutch Masters cigar ash, and his imperturbable good humor.
Dolly was this short, unassuming guy, who when he walked into a room soon had everyone surrounding him listening to him tell stories and jokes, said Fred Peterson, class of 71.
"Dolly's creativity extended from the kitchen to the names of menu items," said Mike Vernick, 83. "Veal Parmigiana was forever-after known as Veal Barm, in recognition of the impressive number consumed by brother Mark Barmasse. And 'pucks' were rock-hard chocolate brownies that could chip a tooth."
Hanging out with Dolly was a highlight of my life at school, said Miguel Ferrer, class of 91. He wasnt the greatest cook, though. In fact, his chicken cordon bleu looked like little fried rats, but we loved eating it anyway.
His birthday party will be hosted by the current brothers of Sigma Pi at their fraternity house on the campus of Cornell University. For a video message from Dolly and more information about the birthday party please visit www.dollyhailstork.com.
