Academy of Art University Alums Win International Design Awards Competition for Sustainable Design
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 26, 2008 -- Two Academy of Art University (http://www.academyart.edu), San Francisco, graphic design school alums have been named as winners in the International Design Awards Land & Sea (http://www.idesignawards.com/) competition for sustainable design. Scott Abel and Vincent Lo were presented with awards at the reception held at New York's H.K. Lounge.
Scott Abel, currently interning with Kit Hinrichs at Pentagram, San Francisco (http://www.pentagram.com/), won the Graphics, Land category for his 155-page self-published book Connect, Discover, Respond, which was his Academy of Art University MFA Thesis project. "Winning this award is a great personal accomplishment but what is more important about this award is that it will help connect more people to the subject of sustainability," said Abel. Abel, originally from Helena, then Bozeman, Montana, is a San Mateo, California resident.
Vincent Lo's project G1 Grand Prix (G1GP) won in the Graphics, Land Student category. G1GP is a conceptual professional automobile race exclusively for environmentally friendly cars that produce low-to-zero harmful emissions and run on sustainable biofuels. "It's important that we all share our awareness of the reality of the diminishing supply of fossil fuels, and our contribution to global warming," said Lo. Lo, originally from Conway, Arkansas, currently resides in San Francisco.
Phil Hamlett, Academy of Art University Director of Graduate Studies for the School of Graphic Design, and Co-Chair for AIGA's Center for Sustainable Design (http://sustainability.aiga.org/) instructed both Able and Lo in their MFA studies. "Teaching sustainable design is a primary focus and we have seen a growing understanding of this amongst our students, an understanding that is reaching beyond simply designing a sustainable class project. We are seeing an increased awareness of what sustainable design means in the much larger picture, and with competitions like IDA, these students are being acknowledged for their understanding," said Hamlett.
The School of Graphic Design recognizes design as a cultural force that spans consumer, commerce and social causes. Under the aegis of Mary Scott, Chair, and Phil Hamlett, Graduate Director, the School of Graphic Design is noted for its real world approach to teaching the art of graphic design, and ardently preparing its students for presenting themselves into the profession of graphic design. Graduates from the School of Graphic Design work in many of the industry's most prestigious firms.
