Long Island College Hospital Takes Over 2 Megawatts Off the Grid
Buffalo, NY (PRWEB) June 9, 2008 -- As part of their commitment to Energy Curtailment Specialists (http://www.ecsny.com/)' (ECS) PowerPay! New York demand response (http://www.ecsny.com/) program, Long Island College Hospital (LICH) of Brooklyn has agreed to curtail 1200 kilowatts when the demand for electricity exceeds the amount available.
On March 27, 2008, LICH was called upon by ECS to shed those 1200 kilowatts for a "test event." The hospital went above and beyond by curtailing 2120 kilowatts; 920 kilowatts more than expected. The hospital's success is due in part to the hospital-wide notification system implemented prior to an event. Also, due to the requirements needed to test the generators for reliability on an ongoing basis, performing these tests during a critical peak demand on the grid is a natural way LICH has incorporated them into this program.
"We performed so successfully due to the participation of everyone in the entire hospital," said Ralph Gambardella, chief engineer at Long Island College Hospital. "We installed systems so the hospital equipment is not interrupted during the changeover to the generator."
When the doctors, nurses, and other staff are notified of the event, they may shut off lights when a room is not in use as part of their own commitment to reducing electricity.
"Long Island College Hospital is an ideal customer for our program because they are so motivated to help within the community all while taking the necessary precautions to assure patient safety," said Glen Smith, president, chief executive officer and co-founder of ECS.
Since becoming enrolled in ECS program, the hospital has become more energy efficient. As part of their continuous improvement for emergency preparedness, they have included a section in the training manual for new employees titled "How to Save Energy."
In 2008, Long Island College Hospital celebrated its 150th year of service to Brooklyn and is pleased to be able to attribute part of its success to new initiatives, including ECS' PowerPay! New York program.
"We are able to continually improve patient safety, due to ECS program," said Gambardella.
