East Carolina University Department of Family Medicine Selects Retasure
Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) March 19, 2008 -- Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in sight-saving retinal risk assessment, announced today that East Carolina University's Family Medicine residency program in Greenville, NC has selected the Retasure solution.
The innovative family medicine department is part of ECU's Brody School of Medicine. The medical school has been ranked by U S News and World Report as one of the top medical schools in the nation and the sixth best primary care school. Family Medicine's 21 faculty physicians, 30 residents and seven physician extenders treat an average of 250 patients a day, including a large diabetic and pre-diabetic population.
"Retasure will allow us to provide critical retinal risk assessments for our diabetic patients who may not otherwise regularly visit an ophthalmologist for eye exams," said Lynn A. Parham, clinical administrative manager for ECU's Department of Family Medicine. "Our physicians were impressed that Retasure is easy and quick to use, and also provides high-quality images. It is a good fit for our largely indigent population and will allow us to further expand our high quality in-office care services."
"ECU is nationally recognized for its strong faculty and exceptional family medicine program," said Scott Sanner, Senior Vice President, of Digital Healthcare. "We are pleased to partner with an organization well-known for its strong commitment to patient quality of care. Their patients will benefit from the Retasure solution and together we'll be able to help ECU providers with eye disease detection and blindness prevention."
The FDA-approved and HEDIS compliant Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure without eye dilation. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours. The simplicity of the assessment process is unique in the market and addresses a previously un-met need for one of the nation's largest public health issues.
There are an estimated 21 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients worldwide have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software.
