Parents as Teachers CEO to Address Missouri School Board Association Feb. 25

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) February 27, 2008 -- Parents as Teachers National Center President and CEO Sue Stepleton will speak at the Missouri School Board Association's Legislative Forum on Monday, Feb. 25, in Jefferson City, Mo. Stepleton will discuss how Missouri's innovation has become an international model and identify some trends in early childhood and parent education today.

"The model that Missouri uses to partner Parents as Teachers with school districts statewide has been incredibly successful in increasing school readiness and engaging parents early in their child's education," said Stepleton. "Parents are their child's first and best teachers, which makes this partnership with the schools very effective. It's one we'd like to see picked up across the nation by other states."

The National Center provides the latest in early childhood development information and parenting support in the areas of school readiness, special needs families and rural outreach. According to the latest research conducted on more than 7,700 Missouri children, families who participated in Parents as Teachers were more prepared for kindergarten, regardless of income level. Parents as Teachers also has a large impact on special needs families, as more than half of the Missouri families served last year demonstrated at least one characteristic of special needs. In addition, Parents as Teachers helps reduce the effects of rural isolation by sending 2,500 Missouri parent educators to visit families in rural areas, delivering information through regular home visits and group meetings.

Among the many programs and curricula offered, Parents as Teachers National Center trains and certifies parent educators to work with families; develops research-based curricula that parent educators use to work with parents; provides program support and advisement in the areas of advocacy, communications and fund development; and works to ensure quality service delivery.
