A School Strives for Fame at the Expense of its Students in the Novel 'Fame and Responsibility at Winford College'

Chapel Hill, NC. (PRWEB) May 29, 2007 -- When he began teaching 50 years ago, John J.W. Rogers believes that schools accepted the responsibility they had for their students. This belief was strengthened during the five years he spent as Master of Brown College at Rice University. Each college had a master who lived on campus to be available to students who had problems at almost any time. But when he came to North Carolina in 1975, he found that large universities had a more difficult time taking care of students than smaller schools. Rogers felt that the sense of responsibility for their students that colleges and universities once had has now diminished. He decided to explore the subject by writing Fame and Responsibility at Winford College.

Fame and Responsibility at Winford College is based in the fictional town of Carrington, Tennessee and it illustrates the tremendous changes colleges and universities have undergone in the past fifty years. "During nearly 50 years as a Professor of Geology," says Rogers, "I developed a strong feeling that colleges and universities care too much about their reputations and not enough about their students." The main characters, Sue, Randy, David, Marianne, and Lily each have their own unique experience at Winford and many years later they become key players in helping to bring Winford back to the respectable college that it was meant to be.

Using subtle humor and satire, author John J. W. Rogers expresses a serious subject that affects colleges and universities today. The text is enhanced by humorous sketches by Chapel Hill artist Sylvia A. Lauterborn.
