Capella University Phd Graduate to Present at the 2007 Council for Exceptional Children Convention

(PRWeb) January 18, 2007 -- Karla Mantooth, PhD, a graduate from Capella University, an accredited, fully online university, will present two papers at the 2007 Council for Exceptional Children Annual Convention. The convention is being held April 18 to 21 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.

Mantooth will present, "Building Bulletproof Transition Programs: What Every Administrator Must Know," which will address programs that guide high school students with disabilities to post-secondary education. She will also discuss, "Finding a Powerful Voice: Emergent Self-Determination among Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities." This paper is a case study of a young woman with intellectual disabilities who completed school and successfully entered the workforce. The paper was essential to Mantooth's dissertation.

"Throughout the entire process of getting my PhD, Capella was very supportive in helping me to develop my own vision for how I wanted to craft my future," Mantooth said. "Capella really encouraged me to dream; to expand myself and look beyond where I was and to rise to the potential that we all have."

Mantooth received her doctorate in education from Capella's School of Education, where her studies focused primarily on special education leadership. She is currently the special education supervising liaison for Cobb County Schools in Atlanta where she oversees programs that allow students with disabilities to go out into the community and learn how to do things in the real world. Mantooth, who has been an educator for 23 years, has been involved with CEC throughout her career. She is also the coauthor of a resource book for special educators, titled, From the Classroom to the Workplace Vols. I and II (1997-Mayer Johnson Publishers).

Since Capella was founded in 1993, more than 1,000 students have earned a doctoral degree on their way to becoming leaders, consultants and instructors. Nearly 45 percent of Capella's 16,300 students are currently pursuing a PhD.
