University of Record Agreement Makes Study Abroad History and Puts Provider of International Education on the Academic Fast-Track

Tempe, AZ (PRWEB) January 17, 2007 -- A unique partnership in higher education and school semester abroad programs was officially launched on Monday, January 15th at a signing ceremony between CEA - Cultural Experiences Abroad, an Arizona-based organization offering study abroad programs for college students, and the University of New Haven (UNH), a private, comprehensive university located in West Haven, Connecticut. This partnership signifies an unprecedented academic agreement, wherein UNH will now act as the University of Record for the CEA GlobalCampus Network, an innovative new model in study abroad.

Following the widely accepted statement by institutional accreditors on “Policy on Contractual Arrangements Involving Courses and Programs,” UNH assumes responsibility to set and monitor all academic standards from the approval of courses to the appointment of faculty within the CEA GlobalCampus Network.

The agreement follows the highest standards of best practices in education abroad, and satisfies the stringent requirements of the university’s institutional accreditor, The Commission on Higher Education of the New England Association for Schools and Colleges (CIHE/NEASC). A full review of the terms of the agreement was conducted at the CIHE/NEASC Board’s November 2006 meeting.

CEA Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Geoffrey Bannister, said, “I have been involved for over twenty years in education abroad as a Dean, University President, Board Chair and association executive, and I know of no more rigorous contract or prior review than CIHE/NEASC enforced on this relationship. The result is a model for education abroad that satisfies the needs of a provider, the highest standards of a fully committed academic institution and the full and transparent demands of an institutional accreditor. While this may seem strange to seasoned university executives, it is the only case I know of in which the accreditor has so comprehensively reviewed and approved the relationship prior to its launch.” You can learn more about this from the CEA Study Abroad podcast “University of Record.”

Already operational in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Florence, the CEA GlobalCampus Network is expanding quickly with intent to expand into London, Rome, Shanghai and the South of France by 2008. The CEA GlobalCampus Network’s mission is to combine academic excellence, cultural competency and international connection through signature CEA GlobalCampus features such as flexibility, mobility, professional focus, hands-on experience and affordability and to provide a strategic asset to the U.S. institutions with whom CEA partners in the provision of study abroad and cross-border education.

Dr. Steven Kaplan, President of the University of New Haven, said “CEA’s organizational strengths, marketing capacities and student responsiveness provide a good complement to the academic strengths of UNH. We are especially excited about the future for the GlobalCampus Network, where our active partnership is focused. The early successes of Barcelona and Paris, and the immediate future for Madrid, Seville, Rome and Florence, bode well for the future of a worldwide academic network focused on best practices in curriculum, pedagogy and technology.”
